Getting started with AI chatbots: a gentle guide for older Australians

In short: You don't need technical skills to use AI. Open a free chatbot, type a question as if you were asking a helpful friend, and check anything important with a trusted source.

Your first five minutes

  1. Choose a free chatbot such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Copilot. Use its official website or app.
  2. Type a question in plain English, like you'd ask a friend.
  3. If the answer isn't clear, ask it to "explain more simply".

Some chatbots also let you speak instead of type: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all list voice features on their free plans.
